Trump Proposes Gaza Displacement Plan: Urges Egypt and Jordan to Resettle Palestinians

Former US President Donald Trump has suggested that Palestinians displaced from Gaza should be relocated to neighboring Egypt and Jordan, describing Gaza as a "demolition site" in urgent need of solutions.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Mr. Trump detailed his vision, recounting a conversation with Jordan’s King Abdullah. "I told him, ‘I’d love you to take on more.’ Gaza is a mess, a real mess," he remarked, adding that he intended to approach Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi with a similar proposal. Trump suggested that this relocation could be temporary or, possibly, long-term.

This proposal has sparked strong opposition from Palestinians and Hamas, who view Gaza as their ancestral home. “Our people in Gaza have endured immense suffering for 15 months of war, and they won’t abandon their land,” said Bassem Naim of Hamas’s political bureau. "No matter how these plans are framed, our people will resist any attempts at displacement."

The war with Israel has devastated Gaza, displacing most of its two million residents and destroying significant infrastructure. The UN estimates that 60% of Gaza's structures have been damaged or destroyed, with reconstruction likely to take decades.

Trump’s comments painted a stark picture of the humanitarian crisis. “You’re looking at a million and a half people displaced. Everything is destroyed. People are dying,” he said. "We need to work with Arab nations to build housing elsewhere where they might finally find peace."

Despite these remarks, Trump provided no specifics on how such a plan would be implemented. The White House’s official summary of his calls did not reference this proposal, leaving questions about its feasibility.

Palestinians like Abu Yahya Rashid, displaced in Khan Younis, are adamant. "This is our land. It’s been our ancestors’ for centuries. We will not leave unless it’s in coffins," he declared.

The issue of displacement and resettlement is particularly sensitive in Jordan and Egypt. Jordan already hosts over two million Palestinian refugees, descendants of those displaced during the 1948 and 1967 conflicts. In Egypt, President Sisi has consistently rejected the idea of forced relocation into the Sinai Peninsula, maintaining that the solution lies in the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

Trump’s remarks challenge decades of US foreign policy, which has traditionally supported a two-state solution, with Gaza integral to a future Palestinian state. How this proposal will unfold remains uncertain, but it has already stirred deep resistance and debate across the region.
