9 Killed, Including 3 Children, In Fire At Building In Delhi's Palam

Nine people, including three children, were killed after a fire broke out in a residential building in southwest Delhi's Palam area on Wednesday morning, officials said.

Delhi Fire Service (DFS) personnel rescued the occupants and rushed them to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared all six dead. The victims include Pravesh (35), Kamal (40), Ashu (32), and three minor girls aged 12, 6 and 5, who were taken to Manipal Hospital.

At IGI Hospital, a woman aged around 38 years was brought in dead, while a man of about 40 years and a two-year-old girl are currently undergoing treatment. 

Safdarjung Hospital has admitted a 19-year-old man with approximately 25% burn injuries.

A total of 10 people have been rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals through ambulances.

According to the DFS, a call reporting the blaze was received at 7:00 am from a house located inside the building. Thirty fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the spot to control the flames and assist in rescue operations. Two people jumped from the building in an attempt to escape the fire and were admitted to a hospital. "Information was received about a fire in a residential unit, and we fear some people might be trapped inside," a Delhi Fire Services officer had said earlier, according to news agency PTI.

The fire was successfully doused after intensive firefighting and rescue efforts.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed concern over the fire at a multi-storey residential building in Palam, and said that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered.

"Extremely distressed to learn about the unfortunate fire incident at a multi-story residential building at Palam," she said on X.

As per the information received, 6 feared dead, few people still trapped inside the building. District Administration, Delhi Fire Service Department & Delhi Police are leading rescue operation. Magisterial enquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident. Praying for everyone's safety."

According to preliminary information, the building consists of a basement, ground floor and four storeys, along with a temporary tin shed on the roof. The basement, ground and first floors were reportedly being used for storing clothes and cosmetics, while the second and third floors served as residential spaces, according to news agency IANS.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu expressed concern over the fire incident near Palam Metro, saying authorities are closely monitoring rescue and firefighting efforts while extending all necessary support to those affected.

In a post on X, he said, "Deeply distressed by the fire incident in a residential building near Palam Metro.

My thoughts are with those affected by this tragic loss. Rescue and firefighting operations are being closely monitored, with all necessary support being extended."

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Further details are awaited.
